Saturday Celebrates Parents Weekend
BERKELEY – The Golden Bears welcome back their fans, with special appreciation for families in celebration of Parents Weekend, on Saturday, January 21, when California takes on Arizona at 1 p.m. followed by UC Santa Cruz at 2:45 p.m. in the home-opening matches of the spring 15s season on Witter Rugby Field.
Admission is free for all Cal students, active military personnel and children under 10 when the gates open at 12 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth 10-19, and $3 for groups of 10 or more, with advance online purchases available at calbea.rs/RugbySpring2017.
The Rugby Bears (4-0) will run out in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2017 after a successful start to their 15-a-side season last weekend in Los Angeles. There, at the Dennis Storer Classic, Cal got tries from 14 different players and saw its kickers get off to a decent start (15-of-20 conversions; 1-of-1 penalties) as the Blue and Gold beat UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and UCLA by the combined score of 133-7.
Saturday's match against Arizona (1-0) also marks the start of Cal's schedule in the PAC Rugby Conference, which the Wildcats will have begun Friday, Jan. 20, at Stanford. Arizona opened its regular season with a 43-17 victory over Santa Clara January 14 in Tucson.
This Saturday, after the Bears face the Wildcats, Cal takes on UC Santa Cruz for the second consecutive weekend, have beaten the team coached by former Cal All-America Robbie Bellue Jan. 14 at the Storer Classic.
Following the celebration of Parents Weekend to kick off the home schedule, PAC Rugby Conference action continues in Strawberry Canyon the following Saturday, Jan. 28, as Utah visits Cal at 1 p.m., after which the Bears take on the Pleasanton Jesters at 2:45.
