TEMPE – The 107-degree heat was formidable, but so was the will of California on Friday.
Although the Golden Bears (27-20, 3-15 Pac-12) fell 9-7 to 22nd-ranked Arizona State, they did not do so without a late-inning fight that brought the Blue and Gold within two after trailing by six earlier in the contest.
The Bears, who lost all four of its conference matchups in April, connected nine times at the plate, seven of which came in the last two innings, while allowing 12 hits by the Sun Devils (29-16, 8-11).
ASU posted a trio of three-run innings, including three multiple-run homers, to keep things out of reach for Cal.
The Bears put up a strong fight in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, scoring six runs to come within two.
In the top of the sixth, Jazmyn Jackson scored after collecting her 17th double on an error that allowed Kobie Pettis to reach 1b. Annie Aldrete, who led the Bears at the plate with two hits on the night, RBI singled to bring Kylie Reed home. Khala Taylor then RBI singled to bring Danielle Bowers, who pinch ran for Kobie Pettis, across the plate.
Taurie Pogue also made her way back to the dish scoring the opening run in the top of the seventh to get things going from an RBI single from Jackson. Jackson, who led the Bears with two runs on, found home again after Lindsay Rood doubled to also bring home Vanessa Alvarez.
Cal got its first run in the top of the fifth from Aldrete who lead off with a double and came home on a sac fly from freshman Bradie Fillmore.
Competition continues tomorrow at 5 p.m. (PT) with a broadcast available on the Pac-12 Network and live stats accessible on CalBears.com.
