No. 11 Cal Opens ITA Kick-Off Vs. UNLV

BERKELEY – California women's tennis starts the dual-match season and attempts to qualify for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship when it hosts an ITA Kick-Off Weekend event on Friday and Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The 11th-ranked Golden Bears opens against UNLV (1-0 record) at 10 a.m. on Friday, with No. 12 Texas (2-0) facing Mississippi State (2-0) at 1 p.m. later that day. The two winners face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the right to advance to national indoors.
Friday's two losing teams in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend play a consolation match at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Hellman.

There are 15 ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournaments taking place around the nation, with the 15 winners joining host Wisconsin to form a 16-team field at national indoors from Feb. 9-12 in Madison. In 2016, Cal captured its first team national championship at national indoors. The Bears fell in the 2017 national indoor quarterfinals.

Cal earned a No. 11 ranking in latest Oracle ITA team poll. In the Oracle ITA singles poll, Bright (22-4 record) is ranked 27th, junior Olivia Hauger (10-4) is ranked 40th and senior Karla Popovic (1-2) – a 2016-17 singles All-American – is ranked 45th. The doubles pair of Popovic and Hauger (8-2) is ranked 39th.
Texas boasts three ranked singles players in No. 10 Biana Turati, No. 32 Petra Granic and Anna Turani, who's tied at 87th
The USTA College Tennis Top 25 team rankings will make their season debut on Jan. 31.
Last Time Out: Bright Wins Singles & Doubles At Cal Winter Invite
Anna Bright collected more honors this season when the Bear won the singles title and – with fellow freshman Julia Rosenqvist – captured the doubles title at the Cal Winter Invitational at ended on Jan. 14 at Hellman and at the Channing Tennis Courts. Bright finished 3-0 in top-flight singles, while the first-year Bears also posted a 3-0 record at top-flight doubles.
Earlier in January, Bright was named the co-champion in top-flight singles at the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Hawaii. She also won the top-flight singles crown and – with freshman Vivian Glozman – took home the top-flight doubles title from the Saint Mary's Invitational in the fall.
Last Year: Bears Beat Missouri To Reach National Indoors
At the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley, then-No. 8 Cal dispatched Missouri, 4-0, to earn a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Maya Jansen posted a 6-0, 7-6(0) win over the Tigers' Amina Ismail to clinch the Bears' victory.

The Bears host a pair of nonconference matches when they take on San Diego State on Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. and then play Santa Clara on Feb. 3 at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
