BERKELEY – After a weeklong break, No. 9 California returns to competition on Saturday, as it takes on No. 5 Stanford and No. 15 Washington in the Stanford Open at 7 p.m. (PT).
The Golden Bears jumped into the top-10 on the CGA National Weekly Coaches Poll after combining for 390.600 score during their opening weekend at home. The Bears moved up one spot to ninth during week two, despite not having competed.
With a strong first competition, highlighted by two event wins for junior all-arounder Aaron Mah on the floor (14.000) and vault (14.200) and an event win for senior Yordan Aleksandrov on the parallel bars (14.350), Cal is ready to test their skills in its first of three appearances at Burnham Pavilion.
Mah is ranked sixth in the nation in the all-around with a 80.700 score, while freshman Shane Saidgh (75.250) sits in 21st after his first collegiate competition. Mah's 14.150 in the parallel bar ties for fourth nationally. Aleksandrov's opening weekend performance on high bar (13.800) ties for fifth in the country.
The Bears were thwarted by their MPSF opponent in the first meet, with the Cardinal pulling in a score of 402.150 to win the Cal Benefit Cup on Jan. 3, but the Blue and Gold hope for improved results this weekend.
"As we have our first road test this weekend I am excited to see how the team responds to this challenge. In practice since our last competition, the team has responded well to any and all the challenges placed on them in preparation for this meet," head coach JT Okada said. "The atmosphere in the gym has been competitive and yet supportive at the same time and should this take place in the meet this weekend, the team can do quite well."
Stanford is led by Robert Neff who leads the nation in the all-around and (82.850) high bar (14.600).
Saturday marks the first faceoff with the Bears and Huskies who fell to top-ranked Nebraska, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 10 Air Force, a MPSF member, and No. 11 Arizona State in the Rocky Mountain Open.
