Cal Records Fourth-Best Score On The Day To Move Up Three Places
STANFORD, Calif. – California women's golf rebounded from a difficult second round to record their top round of the three day Stanford Intercollegiate on the final day at Stanford Golf Course.
The team shot 1-over par in Sunday's final round as they moved from a tie for 12th place into a tie for ninth. Cal finished tied with no. 2-ranked UCLA and finished ahead of three teams ranked in the top 50. Seven of the eight teams that finished in front of Cal rank in the nation's top 26. Cal's final day was one of the best as they shot 285, their best round of the tournament by seven strokes. The Bears finished the tournament 22-over par with a score of 874.
"Today was much better score-wise," head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "We had 17 birdies, and we were able to make way more putts to finish the tournament strong. Today, we played how we had hoped we could play for the whole tournament, but it took us three days to get to this point, so we need to cut down our learning curve and be ready to go in the first round."
Cindy Oh and Katherine Zhu both posted under par rounds. Oh finished in the top-20 for the second time in three tournaments this year as she shot 1-under 70 to finish the tournament in a tie for 13th. Oh recorded five birdies on the day to match her total from the first two days. Oh made up ground on the Par-3's on the back nine as she capitalized on all three opportunities with birdies.
"Cindy fought hard today." McDaniel continued, "She wasn't hitting the ball at her best, but she dug in and made a mental note to score no matter what and she did. I am really proud of her for that."
Zhu had the best day for the Bears as she moved back into the top-25 with a 2-under 69 on the final day. That score tied for the fifth-best mark of the day by any golfer. The freshman played mistake-free golf as she had three birdies and only one bogey on the day. Zhu finished the tournament 3-over. She now has finished in the top-30 of all three stroke play events during her first fall of collegiate golf.
"Katherine started shaky yesterday with three straight bogeys, but ever since that point her play has been really notable," McDaniel said. "She settled in and really played her game and if a few more putts drop, she's in an even stronger position."
Elena Arias shot 1-over par for the second straight day to finish in a tie for 39th. Arias notched four birdies on the day. The freshman from Spain finished the tournament 7-over 220.
"Elena started to make some putts and really started to feel it again towards the end of her round," McDaniel said. "She finished with a birdie on her final hole and I think that momentum will help carry her forward."
Senior Marianne Li finished in a tie for 53rd after she notched three birdies on the final day. She collected 10 birdies throughout the tournament, but finished 11-over 224 after carding a 3-over 74 in Sunday's final round.
Amina Wolf recorded her best round of the tournament at a 4-over 75 as she finished in a tie for 72nd. Maria Herraez Galvez was playing as an individual and notched a 8-over 79 to finish the tournament in a tie for 56th.
"There was a lot of good things that happened in this tournament," McDaniel said. "We strung some good holes together, but we have to go back and lengthen those stretches of play and come in ready to play from the first tee."
The Bears will return to action on November 5th for the beginning of the Pac-12 Preview. The annual tournament held at Nanea Golf Club in Hawaii features the rest of the conference as the teams close out the fall season.
