The Bears Head To Hawaii To Finish The Fall Season
BERKELEY, Calif. – California women's golf heads to Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii for the final tournament of the fall season on Monday through Wednesday.
The Bears will tee off at 10:30 a.m. PT as part of a shotgun start. Cal will tee off from holes 11-15. Cal will play 18 holes on all three days of the tournament. The course is Par-73 and plays at 6372 yards.
"This event couldn't be any better," head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "We get to play at one of the top courses in the country and the hospitality is great every year. We also get to test ourselves against the best competition in the country as we face the other teams in the Pac-12. We really look forward to this event every year."
Cal enters the tournament ranked no. 49 in the weekly golf stat rankings. The Bears will get to compete against some of the top teams in the country. The field includes no. 1 USC, no. 6 UCLA, no. 10 Arizona State, no. 11 Washington, no. 13 Stanford, no. 14 Arizona, no. 35 Oregon State, no. 45 Colorado, no. 48 Oregon, no. 77 Washington State and no. 162 Hawaii.
This will be the fifth and final tournament of the fall season for the Bears and the fifth lineup that they have put forth. The team has seven players capable of stepping in and performing.
"We've got a lineup that we haven't used this fall that we are very encouraged by," Nancy McDaniel said. "I feel like everyone is in a good mindset, going to Hawaii. It's what we need right now, we started slow this fall, but we've come along especially in our last round at Stanford."
The Bears posted a final round score of 285 at the Stanford Intercollegiate to move up three places. Cindy Oh finished in a tie for 13th for her second top-20 finish of the fall. It was the third tournament in a two-week span for the Bears. Freshman Katherine Zhu posted a final round score of 69 to help the Bears move up.
Zhu led the way at the Bears' previous tournament at the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational as she tied for second place. The Bears also collected a head-to-head win over Stanford at the Big Match as they teamed with Cal men's golf. Cindy Oh hit birdies on both holes of a tiebreaker to secure the Cal win.
With two weeks between tournaments, Cal has had time to get on the practice course in preparation for the competition at Nanea Golf Club.
"The energy recently has been great, the whole team is excited to go to Hawaii for the Pac-12 Preview," Marianne Li said. "It's going to be a tough competition, but we are looking forward to it and we've been putting in a lot of good work over the last few weeks."
The team has focused on stringing together multiple shots and following that with multiple rounds together. Part of that emphasis has been in converting close to the hole.
"We've worked really hard around the green," McDaniel said. "I think this tournament will showcase our course management and our short game. We are looking forward to putting those in play over the next week."
This tournament will conclude the fall season for the Bears. They will begin the spring season on February 25-26 at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
