Cal Named National Team Of The Week
Golden Bears Earn FWAA’s Weekly Honor For First Time Since 2003
DALLAS – Cal has been named the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week for its performance in last Saturday's 15-14 win at USC. The announcement was made live Monday during the "Off Campus with Mark Packer" radio show on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM by guest host Braden Gall. The Golden Bears' victory ended a 14-game losing skid to the Trojans and was Cal's first win over USC in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 2000.
Cal trailed 14-0 at halftime against USC before scoring 15 points in the third quarter and pitching a second-half shutout as the Bears held the Trojans to 40 total yards on 31 plays (1.3 yards per play) after the break.
Cal got on the board with a team safety after an errant snap early in the third quarter before
Chase Garbers hooked up with
Vic Wharton III on a 29-yard touchdown pass and later scored on his own five-yard run to account for Cal's points.
The Bears sealed the win by converting a fourth-and-one play at the USC 33-yard line late with just over two minutes remaining in the game before running out the clock.
Cal was last named the national team of the week by the FWAA after its 2003 win over USC and also earned the honor in 2002 in the first year of the award after a victory at Michigan State.
The Football Writers Association of America selects the weekly winner and all Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected.
