Cal Trio Earns All-Tournament Honors

Hooper, Masmanidis, Simsek Receive Recognition
BERKELEY - After going 2-1 and reaching the final of the MPSF Championships, the Cal men's water polo team received three All-Tournament nods as the trio of Johnny Hooper, Odysseas Masmanidis and Safak Simsek was recognized for its accomplishments at the recently concluded tournament in Los Angeles.
Wins over Austin College and USC helped Cal reach the title match of the conference tournament and, although the Bears couldn't pull out a back and forth battle against Stanford in the final, they ended the season with an 18-6 overall record and top-four national ranking.
The tournament proved to be Hooper and Masmanidis' last appearance in a Cal cap and both seniors performed well throughout. Hooper finished the weekend with five goals, 12 assists, nine steals and four ejections earned while Masmanidis tallied five goals, three assists and nine ejections earned.
Simsek delivered one of the season's most memorable moments, scoring the game-winning goal with six seconds left as Cal defeated No. 1-ranked USC 10-9 in the semifinals. The junior from Istanbul, Turkey finished the weekend with five goals, six assists and two field blocks.
