Cal Faces Trojans, Bruins In L.A.

BERKELEY – California women's tennis hopes to extend a three-match winning streak when the 17th-ranked Golden Bears take on No. 48 USC and No. 9 UCLA in a pair of nonconference matches this week in Los Angeles. Cal (4-1) faces the Trojans (4-2) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Bears play the Bruins at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
UCLA has a 6-2 record and hosts Fresno State on Friday.

Later this spring, Cal faces the L.A. schools in Pac-12 Conference matches, as the Bears host USC on March 9 and UCLA on March 10 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Last season, Cal swept USC in two matches, beating the Trojans 6-1 in Berkeley and 4-3 in Los Angeles. The Bears also defeated the Bruins 6-1 in Berkeley but lost to UCLA 4-3 in L.A. last year.
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 17th in this week's USTA College Tennis Top 25 poll, and the Bears are ranked 34th in this week's Oracle ITA Rankings. In the singles Oracle ITA Rankings, freshman Anna Bright (25-6) is 29th, junior Olivia Hauger (14-4) is 42nd and senior Karla Popovic (1-2) is 56th.
USC is ranked 48th in the Oracle ITA team poll but is unranked in the USTA poll. The Bruins are ninth in the Oracle ITA Rankings, while the USTA ranks UCLA 11th.
Trojans Gabby Smith (30th) and Madison Westby (110th) and five Bruins – No. 11 Ena Shibahara, No. 40 Abi Altick, No. 59 Jada Hart, No. 73 Terri Fleming and No. 99 Alaina Miller – are ranked in singles. In doubles, USC's Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes are 39th, while UCLA's Hart and Shibahara are ranked fifth, Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield are 24th, Andrews and Hart are 30th, and Hart and Fleming are 38th.

California was back in action for the first time since early this month, as freshman Jasie Dunk clinched the No. 15 Golden Bears' 5-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara on a blustery and chilly Feb. 18 afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Dunk defeated the Gauchos' Stephanie Yamada 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in one of four three-set matches to clinch the win.
Hana Mraz, another Cal freshman, made her college debut, as she paired with junior Maria Smith to beat UCSB's Amanda Atanasson and Lise Sentenac, 6-4, at court-three doubles. The Bears clinched the doubles point when the pair of junior Olivia Hauger and freshman Vivian Glozman beat Yamada and Amit Lev Avri, 6-4, on court two.

Cal returns to Hellman to play second-ranked Pepperdine on March 3 at 12 p.m.
