Cal Welcomes Waves To Hellman
2/27/2018 3:17 PM | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY – California women's tennis faces another nationally ranked team from Southern California this week, as the No. 44 Golden Bears host No. 6 Pepperdine on Saturday no sooner than 1 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal (4-3) hopes to snap a two-match losing streak when it plays the Waves, who have a 6-1 record.
The match was scheduled to start at 12 p.m., but rain in Berkeley has pushed the start to 1 p.m. at the earliest. The Waves are hoping to get at least one match in on their trip to the San Francisco Bay Area. They only played a few games on Friday at Stanford before rain forced the postponement of that match.
Admission is free for regular-season tennis at Hellman.
Live streams and scores are available at Hellman by clicking here. Fans can also follow Cal home matches by following the Bears on Twitter @calwomenstennis.
Cal is coming off losses at No. 48 USC and No. 9 UCLA (see below). Pepperdine last played on Feb. 12, when it lost to North Carolina, 4-2, in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Last season, the Bears and Waves were scheduled to play each other in Malibu, California, but rain forced the cancellation of the match.
Cal swept Pepperdine in two matches during the 2015-16 season. The Bears routed the Waves, 7-0, during the regular season in Berkeley and then held off Pepperdine in a 4-2 victory in the NCAA quarterfinals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Poll Position
In this week's Oracle ITA Rankings, Cal is ranked 44th, while Pepperdine is ranked sixth. Last week, the USTA College Tennis Top 25 poll had the Bears 17th and the Waves second. The USTA will release its new poll on Wednesday.
In the most recent Oracle ITA Rankings for singles, freshman Anna Bright (26-7) is 29th, junior Olivia Hauger (15-5) is 42nd and senior Karla Popovic (1-2) is 56th.
Six Waves are ranked in singles in No. 13 Ashley Lahey, No. 14 Mayar Sherif, No. 36 Luisa Stefani, No. 48 Evgeniya Levashova, No. 91 Dznia Milovanovic and No. 92 Laura Gulbe. Three Pepperdine pairs are ranked in doubles in No. 26 Sherif and Lahey, No. 34 Stefani and Sherif, and No. 58 Milovanovic and Levashova.
Last Time Out: Bears Drop Two In L.A.
Cal lost at No. 48 USC, 4-3, on Feb. 23 and at No. 9 UCLA, 5-2, on Feb. 24 in Los Angeles. Against the Trojans, the Bears got singles wins from Olivia Hauger (who upset No. 30 Gabby Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, on court 1), Anna Bright (6-3, 6-1 over Becca Weissmann, court 2) and Maria Smith (6-2, 1-6, 6-0 over No. 110 Madison Westby, court 4). Smith also posted a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(10-6) win over UCLA's Ayan Broomfield on court four, while freshman Julia Rosenqvist upset the Bruins' 37th-ranked Terri Fleming, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, on court three.
