Cal Hosts Three Matches This Week At Hellman

BERKELEY – California women's tennis ends a six-match homestand with three contests this week starting with a nonconference clash against Texas Tech on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The 22nd-ranked Golden Bears bring a 5-5 record into that match, while the No. 9/6 Lady Raiders are 9-2. Cal (1-1 in the Pac-12) returns to conference play when the Bears host Colorado (8-3, 1-1 Pac-12) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and host Utah (8-5, 1-1 Pac-12) on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Both Colorado and Utah play matches before heading to Berkeley, with the Buffaloes taking on Rice on Tuesday and the Utes traveling to UC Davis on Thursday and to Stanford on Friday.
Admission is free for regular-season tennis at Hellman.

In last week's USTA College Top 25, the Bears were ranked 22nd, while the Bears were not ranked in last week's Oracle ITA team poll. Also last week, the USTA ranked Texas Tech sixth and the Oracle ITA poll ranked the Lady Raiders ninth. The new Oracle ITA Rankings come out on Tuesday, while the USTA poll comes out on Wednesday.
Four Bears were ranked in last week's Oracle ITA singles rankings: Junior Olivia Hauger (17-6) is 32nd, freshman Anna Bright (27-9) is 35th, senior Karla Popovic (1-2) is 63rd and freshman Julia Rosenqvist (11-4) is 68th.
Four Texas Tech players are ranked in singles in No. 9 Gabriela Talaba, No. 42 Felicity Maltby, No. 73 Sarah Dvorak and No. 82 Sabrina Fedrici. Colorado's Linda Huang is 113th. In doubles, two Lady Raider teams are ranked in No. 14 Dvorak/Federici and No. 54 Maltby/Talaba.

Cal split its first Pac-12 Conference matches of the season, routing No. 47 USC, 7-0, on March 9 before falling short against No. 8/13 UCLA, 4-3, on March 10 at Hellman.
The Bears avenged a 4-3 loss at USC two weeks earlier when Maria Smith clinched the Friday victory in Berkeley in the Pac-12 opener. As in the earlier meeting, Smith defeated USC's Madison Westby at court-four singles, though this time the Cal junior won in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, and clinched a win.
On Saturday, Julia Rosenqvist posted another upset victory, Cal added an upset win in doubles and Vivian Glozman got her second straight singles win in a dual match, but it wasn't enough as No. 8 UCLA topped No. 22 Cal.
The Bruins clinched when 41st-ranked Jada Hart upset 35th-ranked Anna Bright, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at court-two singles to give UCLA a 4-2 lead. With Cal freshman Vivian Glozman leading Ayan Broomfield, 1-6, 7-6(4), 3-0, on court five at the time, Broomfield retired with an injury to make the final score 4-3.

Cal hits the road to play Pac-12 Conference matches at Arizona on March 30 and at Arizona State on March 31.
