Bears Name Spring Academic Starting 7

BERKELEY - Success in the classroom continued to follow the Cal men's water polo team even after the 2017 season came to a close as the Bears enjoyed another strong academic semester and head coach Kirk Everist has named the team's Academic Starting 7 for the spring of 2018.
The Academic Starting 7 consists of the top seven grade point average (GPA) holders for the semester and ranks as one of the most important, and most competitive, groups on the team. It is announced at the conclusion of each semester.
Leading the way for the spring was Jordan Hoover as the sophomore compiled a 3.90 GPA to rank first on the team. Gianni Taranto followed with a 3.84 mark while Bernardo Carelli posted a 3.75. Outgoing senior Luca Cupido checked in at 3.67, Timothy Simenc also compiled a 3.67 mark and Chase Hamming registered a 3.53. Freshmen Cameron Wright and Nikos Delagrammatikas tied for the seventh and final spot, each compiling a 3.50 GPA.
Cal's academic success was a carryover from the fall as the Bears landed nine players on both the MPSF and ACWPC All-Academic lists. Cal also earned distinction as an All-Academic team from the ACWPC for carrying a team GPA over 3.0.
