Kadono Lifts Bears Over Incarnate Word

BERKELEY – Senior Shinya Kadono scored his first goal of the season to lead the Cal men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Incarnate Word on Sunday at Edwards Stadium.

Kadono, who is tied as the top returning goal-scorer in the Pac-12 this season, converted off an assist from freshman Ian Lonergan in the game's 49th minute.

"I just saw Ian had lots of time with the ball," Kadono said. "He has a great long pass, and I just went for it. He gave me a perfect pass and I just had to get it into the net."

The Bears played the final 54 minutes of the match with a man advantage after a red card was presented to UIW's Marjan Gamsjager. Cal pressured the Cardinal's defense for most of the game, winning the battle of shots, 11-5.

"Percentage of chances created versus how many went in was definitely not as high as we would have wanted," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "The good sign is there were a lot of chances created. We didn't have our best finishing day, for sure. I think on another day, two, three maybe four go in. It just so happened all we needed today was one."

The Bears had 10 corner kicks while the Cardinals didn't have any. Senior Sam Ebstein led Cal with three shots while Kadono, junior Simon Lekressner and freshman Taylor Davila each had two.

The win capped a successful season-opening weekend in which Cal (2-0) also defeated Detroit Mercy 2-1 in its first match on Friday.

"We played two teams from out of region that play a different style than we normally see on the West Coast, so I think it's really good for us to be able to continue to adapt to different schemes that different opponents have when they go against us," Grimes said. "I think overall it was super beneficial on both ends."

The Bears will take to the road for the first time this season when they visit Pacific on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
