It's a special week for the Cal men's soccer team, as the Bears play their first game ever at nearby Avaya Stadium - the home of the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. Cal head coach Kevin Grimes is a former player for the San Jose franchise, when it was known as the San Jose Clash. Grimes played for the Clash in 1996. Cal will meet Sac State at 7 p.m., and admission and parking are free. The Bears will then return to Edwards Stadium on Sunday to wrap up the week against UC Riverside at 2 p.m. That will begin a stretch of three straight home matches for Cal, which plays eight of its first 11 in Berkeley.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears suffered a wrenching 2-1 overtime loss to Pacific on Friday in a battle of top-20 teams. Cal entered the match ranked No. 14 nationally while the Tigers were No. 17, and the teams played a high-level, hard-fought contest worthy of its billing. After the Tigers got on the board first, the Bears tied the score on senior Sam Ebstein's second goal of the season. That came part of a domnating second half for Cal, which controlled the field for most of the half but was only able to manage the one goal. The Tigers ended it with a goal off a corner kick in the 99th minute.
EBBS AND FLOWS
Senior Sam Ebstein has been a focal point of Cal's offense so far, leading the team with eight shots and two goals. He scored the game-winner in the Bears' season-opening win over Detroit Mercy, then tied the score in the second half of last week's eventual 2-1 overtime defeat at Pacific. Ebstein is tied for third in the Pac-12 in goals per game (0.67), tied for fifth in points per game (1.33) and seventh in shots per game (2.67). Ebstein was an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention pick last season.

Senior Shinya Kadono entered the 2018 season with a lot of notoriety, and it didn't take long for him to demonstrate why. Kadono played an integral role in each of Cal's two wins during it season-opening weekend, registering the assist on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Detroit Mercy and then scoring the match's only goal in a 1-0 triumph over Incarnate Word. Kadono is the leading returning goal-scorer in the Pac-12 along with Washington's Scott Menzies and was named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Cal head coach Kevin Grimes expected to play a lot of freshmen this season, and if the first three matches of the season are any indication, he was right on. Four players have played in every minute so far, and two of them - JJ Foe Nuphaus and Ian Lonergan - are freshmen. Another freshman, Taylor Davila, has started all three matches while redshirt freshman Alonzo Del Mundo and true freshmen Christian Gomez and Jonathan Estrada have each seen significant playing time off the bench. Lonergan recorded his first career assist on the game-winner against Incarnate Word, while Taylor Davila has registered four shots. Nuphaus was ranked as the nation's 39th-best player by Top Drawer Soccer while Lonergan came in at No. 61 and Davila at No. 66. With eight true freshmen and four redshirt freshmen on the roster, 12 of Cal's 24 student-athletes are playing their first season of collegiate soccer.
