Cal Takes Trip to Stanford

BERKELEY – After a compelling opening weekend, where California proved the strength of its newcomers and the resiliency of the team to overcome challenges, the Golden Bears continue their pursuits Saturday at the Stanford Open in Burnham Pavilion.
The meet, scheduled for a 7 p.m. (PT) start, pits No. 9 Cal against top-ranked Stanford and No. 19 Nor Cal United, a first-year team made up of Northern California collegiate gymnasts whose institutions don't offer a varsity men's gymnastics program.
A week ago, Cal fell to Stanford at the Cal Benefit Cup 411.250-392.350, while Nor Cal opened in Seattle, falling to Washington and Arizona State, both club teams.
Despite the end result, Cal's weekend was highlighted by Aaron Mah's shared win of the high bar and now is tied for fifth best in the nation. The Bears hit on four consecutive routines to close the meet after struggling in the initial routines on the apparatus and difficulty on the pommel horse.
The Bears also got new life from freshman Darren Wong, who posted team highs on both pommel and vault. Wong ranks 13th nationally in the all-around after finishing fourth in his collegiate debut, recording a 77.700.
Sophomore Shane Sadighi led the Bears on floor, matching his career best in his 2019 debut with a 13.950 to help Cal hold a 67.600-64.400 edge after the opening rotation. His performance is currently tied for 12th in the nation.
"We're looking forward to our first road test," said head coach JT Okada. "Even though it's close to home, being in a different place, on different equipment is always a challenge and one that I'm confident the team is ready for.
"We've gone back to the gym from last weekend's meet and some adjustments that I know the team is eager to display."
Cal currently ranks sixth in the nation on floor after combining for a 67.600 last weekend and ranks seventh in parallel bars, eighth on high bar, ninth on vault and 10th on rings.
The meet will be live streamed on Pac-12.com.
