Group Honored For Work In Classroom
BERKELEY - One of the most important accolades given to Cal men's water polo players each semester is a spot on the Academic Starting 7 and head coach Kirk Everist announced Thursday the seven Golden Bears who led the way in the classroom during the fall of 2018.
The Academic Starting 7 consists of the top seven grade point average (GPA) holders for the semester and ranks as one of the most important, and most competitive, groups on the team. It is announced at the conclusion of each semester.
Junior Gianni Taranto continued what has been a standout academic career throughout his time at Cal, earning a 4.0 GPA to lead the team. Freshman Kaan Gezguc made his first semester in Berkeley a productive one, compiling a 3.85 GPA alongside redshirt junior Timothy Simenc, who has also been one of the team's strongest academic performers throughout his time at Cal. Redshirt freshman Tamir Avital made the list at 3.65, sophomore Cade Kruse followed with a 3.49 mark, freshman Jack Deely came next at 3.35 and junior Jordan Hoover rounded out the list at 3.33.
The naming of the Academic Starting 7 marks the first of what should be several academic honors for the Bears over the next few weeks as both the MPSF and ACWPC will name their All-Academic teams soon.
