BERKELEY – After some quality time in the Bay Area to begin the first three weeks of the 2019 season, the California men's gymnastics team will head on its first "true" road trip – destination Tempe, Ariz. – for the Pac-12 Invitational on Saturday.
The meet, set for a 1 p.m. (PT) start, also marks the first quad competition for the Golden Bears this season as they face a field that includes familiar foe No. 2 Stanford as well as host team Arizona State, rounded out by Washington.
Cal heads to the desert with some momentum as the team collectively recorded 10 career bests and seven season highs last Sunday at Haas Pavilion against Stanford.
"It's time to take this show out of state and get some experience with travel competition," said head coach JT Okada. "This is a process we will need to become accustom to as we head into the second half of season and conference championships."
The Bears are currently ranked seventh on floor with a season best of 68.100 on their most consistent apparatus and eighth on parallel bars with a year high of 66.750.
While the steady improvement has certainly been collective, Cal standouts freshman Darren Wong and Aaron Mah have been key contributors.
Wong put on a show last weekend as he added two more career bests in the vault (14.300) and rings (13.350). The Vancouver native, is set to compete in the all-around for the second time this season, and after his first showing at The Farm, where he took the all-around title (81.300) behind five career performances, hopes are high.
Mah, who competed in the all-around for the first time last Sunday, anchored the Bears with top scores on floor (14.100) and high bar (13.650). The senior also pulled in three season bests on pommel horse (13.150), vault (13.250) and floor.
The Bears look to improve their 1-3 season record and are in prime position to do so this weekend.
