Bears Can't Keep Up With Arizona State

Bradley Drains Career-High 19 Points In Defeat

BERKELEY – Freshman Matt Bradley scored a career-high 19 points but the Cal men's basketball team couldn't keep up with Arizona State on Wednesday in an 80-66 loss at Haas Pavilion.

Bradley was 7-for-12 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, to eclipse his previous high point-total of 16 set against San Jose State on Dec. 21.

Sophomore Darius McNeil added 16 points for the Bears (5-10, 0-3 Pac-12), who started the game strongly and built a 25-11 lead with 6:23 left in the first half. But the Sun Devils (11-4, 2-1) began to chip away at the deficit and trimmed the lead to 35-33 at halftime.

"It was a very difficult loss," Cal head coach Wyking Jones said. "We did a good job out of the gates but it kind of shifted at the end of the first half. We knew they were a tough, physical team but they didn't look like it in the first half. In the second half, they showed it and played tougher than we did."

The game was still tied at 41-41 with 15:59 to go but Arizona State went on a 19-5 run to take control. McNeil hit a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws and Bradley scored five points during a late run that sliced the deficit to 73-65 with 3:10 to play, but ASU easily broke the Bears' full-court press with a couple of easy buckets to seal the win.

"In the first half, we played really well at both ends," Bradley said. "In the second half, we went on a drought for a couple minutes. They were defending us really well."

Cal played its second consecutive game without starting point guard Paris Austin, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle.

The Bears played most of the game in a 2-3 zone which suffocated the Sun Devils early on. At the second media timeout of the first half with 11:42 remaining, Arizona State was just 1-for-12 from the floor, including 0-for-7 on 3-point attempts. After ASU's Rob Edwards finally hit a 3-pointer to cut Cal's advantage to 14-10 at the 9:56 mark of the half, the Bears went on an 11-1 run to post their biggest lead of the night.

The Sun Devils' comeback was sparked by sophomore guard Remy Martin, who came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range. Martin entered the game shooting just 19.5 percent on 3-point attempts and 37.7 percent overall.

"He played a great game. You have to give him credit," Jones said. "He comes into the game shooting 19 percent from 3. You're going to let that guy shoot."

Cal returns to the Haas Pavilion floor Saturday when it hosts Arizona at 7:30 p.m. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
