PROVIDENCE, RI - Trailing 2-0 at halftime, California scored twice in the second half to erase the two-goal deficit, but Brown scored late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Golden Bears, 3-2, Thursday afternoon on the Brown campus.Â
The Golden Bears fell to 4-8 on the year.Â
"There aren't any excuses, we had a poor start today," head coach
Shellie Onstead said. "I was pretty happy after the halftime break, but you have to give credit to Brown. They seemed to have the key to winning the mental game. I thought we had enough to get the win today, but at this point, it's all about moving on to tomorrow.Â
Monica Arteaga registered a goal and an assist while
Gabi Jimenez scored the other goal for the Bears. Arteaga has now posted three points after scoring her first collegiate goal last Sunday against Central Michigan.Â
"Monica did a good job on the attack and Gabi's second goal was pretty key," Onstead said. "I thought that would be enough momentum to lift us. Brown fought back well, and then it was just a battle to the end in the fourth quarter. They did a good job converting on a corner."
Brown scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the contest, including notching its second on a breakaway. Arteaga cut the deficit to one late in the third quarter when she collected a rebound and found the back of the cage.Â
In the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, Jimenez scored to tie the contest at two before Brown converted on a penalty corner halfway through the fourth quarter to clinch the win.Â
The Bears posted 12 shots, four of them from Jimenez.Â
Cal is back in action at Sacred Heart tomorrow at 4 pm PT from New Haven, Ct.Â
