Cal Splits Squad For Golden State Tournaments

BERKELEY – Amanda Augustus and some of her California women's tennis players are competing in the inaugural Women's Collegiate Classic from Thursday-Sunday in Malibu, California, while other Golden Bears play in the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational from Friday-Sunday at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
The Women's Collegiate Classic will be held at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, with the draws posted Thursday morning. Doubles matches will start at 9 a.m. and singles will start at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. Cal junior Julia Rosenqvist is the seventh seed in the 32-player singles field, which includes Cal teammates Anna Bright, Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov. In doubles on Thursday, the pair of Rosenqvist and Giavara opens against Florida State's Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia, with Bright and Ivanov taking on Georgia's Elena Christofi and Marta Gonzalez.
Last Time: Bears Win 3 Titles In Cal Fall Invite
Cal captured three titles as its Cal Fall Invitational came to a close on Sept. 29, with Julia Rosenqvist winning the top-flight titles in singles and, with Jasie Dunk, taking the top-flight crown in doubles and with Katerina Stloukalova adding the Gold singles crown.
The third-seeded Dunk and Rosenqvist edged another Cal duo, the fourth-seeded Anna Bright and freshman Erin Richardson, 8-7(5), in the day's first completed final at the Hellman Tennis Complex. In the afternoon, she faced a familiar opponent in the 68th-ranked Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's in the Blue singles final. The third-seeded Gael knocked off Cal freshman Valentina Ivanov, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals, and last year, Kozyreva beat Rosenqvist in the semifinals. But this time was different, with Rosenqvist prevailing, 6-4, 6-3, over the Gael in the title match.
Stloukalova defeated Gonzaga's Cate Broerman, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, to collect her title.
Last Year In The SMC Fall Invite
Current Cal undergraduate student assistant coach Maria Smith reached the A singles final in the 2018 Saint Mary's Fall Invitational. But the veteran Bear fell to Stanford's Niluka Madurawe, 6-1, 6-3, in the title match. Alexis Nelson, Jasie Dunk and Jessica Zeynel also posted singles victories in last year's tournament in Moraga.

Cal earned four spots in the ITA preseason rankings this fall. In singles, junior Julia Rosenqvist – who played in the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship and had a 24-18 record last year – is ranked 24th; she ended last season ranked 40th. Anna Bright, another junior who had a 27-10 record and a final ranking of 74th, last season is now ranked 42nd. The pair of Bright and junior Jasie Dunk (17-10 in 2018-19) is ranked 13th and the new duo of Rosenqvist and freshman Haley Giavara is ranked 44th in doubles. Last season, Dunk and Bright had a No. 49 final ranking.
