STANFORD, Calif. – With national championship qualification at stake, three Golden Bears forged their way into Monday semifinals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with wins on Sunday at the Taube Family Tennis Center. Valentina Ivanov defeated fellow Cal freshman Haley Giavara in the singles quarterfinals, while Giavara and Anna Bright won twice in doubles to advance.

The regional's main draw singles finalists and doubles champions automatically qualify for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November.

In the regional singles quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Ivanov bested the fourth-seeded Giavara, who lost her first sets of the tournament in a 6-2, 6-4 setback. Bright, meanwhile, fell to ninth-seeded Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarters. Ivanov will face Stanford's top-seeded Michaela Gordon in the semis on Monday at noon.

Bright and Giavara, seeded fourth in main draw doubles, posted a comfortable 8-2 victory over Lauren Ko and Sara Tsukamoto of UC Davis in the round of 16. The Bears then topped the Gaels' fifth-seeded Kovyreva and Danielle McIntyre, 8-3, in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal against Stanford's second-seeded Emily Arbuthnott and Angelica Blake on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Cal's top-seeded pair of Ivanov and Julia Rosenqvist lost in a round of 16 upset to Oregons Rifanty Kahfiani and Allison Mulville, 8-5.

Cal senior Alexis Nelson, playing in consolation singles, lost to Cal Poly's Emily Monaghan, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(6).
