No. 8 Cal To Clash With UC Santa Barbara On Sunday
BERKELEY – With a full two weeks off from competition, a well-rested No. 8 California will jump back in the pool when it faces No. 4 UC Santa Barbara at noon (PT) on Sunday in Santa Barbara.
The Bears (10-6) have not played since suffering an overtime loss to Pepperdine on Oct. 12 in Berkeley and are aiming to close out a quiet October in strong fashion. Cal and UCSB have already clashed once this fall; the Gauchos (15-5) handed Cal an 8-5 defeat on Sept. 8 at the Triton Invitational. Sunday's match will have live stats provided via the FOSH.

ABOUT UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos took the collegiate water polo scene by storm, opening the season with 15 consecutive wins en route to earning its first No. 1 ranking in program history. Since Sept. 28, however, UCSB is winless, having lost five straight matches to the likes of UCLA, USC and Pacific. Three different Gauchos have earned GCC Player of the Week honors this season, including attacker Leo Yuno, goalkeeper Danny Roland and attacker Cole Brosnan.
UCSB will play at Long Beach State on Saturday evening before the quick turnaround to face Cal on Sunday.
LAST TIME VS. UC SANTA BARBARA
Then-No. 7 UC Santa Barbara netted four third-quarter goals and upended Cal in a defensive battle, 8-5, at the Triton Invitational on Sept. 8. Safak Simsek scored twice but the Bears struggled in power-play opportunities (2-for-13).
Cal opened the match with a 3-1 lead four minutes in after Simsek scored twice and Jordan Hoover added his lone goal of the game. UCSB knotted it up by the end of the first quarter and took a 4-3 lead with less than two minutes prior to halftime. Jack Deely found the back of the net at the 13-second mark of the half to lock the score once again.
Adrian Weinberg suffered his first loss in goal after making four saves against 12 shots over three quarters. He was replaced by Anthony Rethans, who helped Cal hold the Gauchos scoreless in the fourth frame. Joe Molina added Cal's fifth goal and the end of the third quarter and posted one assist earlier in the match.
EARNING THEIR STRIPES
With a young roster at his disposal, Cal head coach Kirk Everist has asked multiple freshmen to step up with big minutes and production. The most impressive of those newcomers are goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg and center Nikolaos Papanikolaou, both of which have been named MPSF Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 7 and Sept. 30, respectively. Weinberg has started 15 of 16 matches and ranks second in the MPSF with 141 saves (8.8 per game). Papanikolaou's 34 goals and 38 points rank fourth and eighth among MPSF players.
Other freshmen with key reps include Garrett Dunn (10 goals, nine steals, six assists) – who tallied five points and a hat trick in Cal's last match – Warren Loth (nine goals, one assist, seven field blocks) and Sam Untrecht (nine goals, 14 steals).
LUCKY LEFTY
Senior attacker Safak Simsek is on pace to finish his collegiate career as one of Cal's most successful goal scorers and is the team's active leader with 145. A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Simsek has excelled as the focal point of the Bears' offense this fall, as he is fourth in points (49) and third in goals (38) among MPSF players.
The left-hander scored multiple goals in 13 of 16 matches and has netted at least one in all 16. He has added 11 assists and eight steals so far. Simsek earned a slew of postseason awards last year as he was named to the ACWPC All-America Third Team, the MPSF All-Tournament Team and the All-MPSF Second Team.
CAPTAIN HOOVER
Jordan Hoover is making the most of his fifth and final year as a Bear. The team captain ranks third on the team with 29 goals, just four shy of tying his career-best (33) from one season ago. and also needs just seven more to reach 100 for his career With 32 ejections earned, 10 steals and three field blocks to his name as well, Hoover is proving to be one of Cal's most reliable pieces.
GLUE GUY
Sophomore Jack Deely has done a bit of everything for the Bears in his second season with the program. He's scored in nine straight matches and 13 of 16 on the season. Overall, Deely has 19 goals, seven assists, 10 drawn ejections and eight steals. His .463 shooting percentage is the best on the team (20 or more shots taken).
NEXT TIME
The Bears will head to SoCal next weekend to face No. 2 UCLA on Nov. 2 and No. 7 Long Beach State on Nov. 3. Cal has faced the Bruins once this season, falling 12-9 on Sept. 28 at the SoCal Invitational.
