EARNING THEIR STRIPES
With a young roster at his disposal, Cal head coach Kirk Everist has asked multiple freshmen to step up through the first half of the season. The most impressive of those newcomers are goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg and center Nikolaos Papanikolaou. Weinberg has started all but one match between the pipes and ranks sixth nationally with 115 total saves (8.2 per game). Papanikolaou's 35 points and 31 goals are tied for seventh and fourth among MPSF players, respectively. Papanikolaou was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week on Monday after tallying nine points (eight goals, one assist) and 12 drawn exclusions at the SoCal Invitational.
Other freshmen with key reps include Sam Untrecht (nine goals, 13 steals, two field blocks) and Garrett Dunn (six goals, four assists, eight steals), both of which have played all 14 matches.
LUCKY LEFTY
Senior attacker Safak Simsek is on pace to finish his collegiate career as one of Cal's most successful goal scorers and is the team's active leader with 139. A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Simsek has excelled as the focal point of the Bears' offense this fall, as he is tied for the MPSF lead with 42 points and ranks third in goals (32).
The left-hander scored multiple goals in 11 of 14 matches and has netted at least one in all 14. He has added 11 assists and eight steals so far. Simsek earned a slew of postseason awards last year as he was named to the ACWPC All-America Third Team, the MPSF All-Tournament Team and the All-MPSF Second Team.
CAPTAIN HOOVER
Jordan Hoover is making the most of his fifth and final year as a Bear. The team captain ranks third on the team with 27 goals, just six shy of tying his career-best (33) from one season ago. and also needs just nine more to reach 100 for his career With 29 ejections earned, nine steals and three field blocks to his name as well, Hoover is proving to be one of Cal's most reliable pieces.
DOING IT ALL
Junior transfer Jasmin Kolasinac has done a bit of everything for the Bears' offense so far this season. He is the MPSF leader in assists (24) and ranks second in steals (17) and third in points (42).
Kolasinac was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 23 after totaling 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in four wins at the Aggie Roundup on Sept. 21-22. The Serbian transferred from Wagner College, where he scored 203 goals in two seasons and earned an ACWPC All-American honorable mention in 2018.
TEAM COMES FIRST

Carelli has logged 72 minutes in goal and tallied 18 saves against 36 shots. The veteran proved his worth on Sept. 22 in a comeback win over Santa Clara. With Cal trailing 6-5 just before halftime, Carelli replaced Weinberg and re-energized Cal's defensive play with three second-half saves and earned the win.
