MALIBU, Calif. – Haley Giavara made a big splash in just her second tournament as a collegian, with the California women's tennis freshman upsetting Duke's top-seeded and fifth-ranked Kelly Chen in the inaugural Women's Collegiate Classic at Pepperdine.

Giavara first defeated Georgia's 113th-ranked Elena Christofi, 6-4, 6-1, in the singles round of 32 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. She then knocked off arguably the best player in the tournament in Chen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 16.
Also in the singles round of 32, Cal's 24th-ranked and seventh-seeded Julia Rosenqvist fell in three sets to Pepperdine's Anastasia Iamachkine, 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4, the 42nd-ranked Anna Bright lost to Florida State's Petra Hule, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Valentina Ivanov fell to Pepperdine's fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Ashley Lahey, 6-3, 6-3.
Earlier in doubles, Cal's pair of Bright and Ivanov topped Georgia's Christofi and Marta Gonzalez, 6-3, while the 44th-ranked duo of Giavara and Rosenqvist lost to Florida State's Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia.
The tournament continues on Friday with more main draw action and consolation matches.
