Golden Bears And Cardinal To Play For 122nd Time November 23 At Stanford Stadium
BERKELEY – The 122nd Big Game between Cal and Stanford on November 23 will kick off at 1 pm PT from Stanford Stadium and be televised live by Pac-12 Network. The first Big Game was played in 1892, beginning a series that is tied for the sixth-longest active running series between Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams.
Stanford holds a 64-46-11 all-time advantage and has a current winning streak of nine that is the longest by either team in the series. The streak includes a 17-14 Stanford victory the last time the Big Game was played at Stanford Stadium in 2017 and a 23-13 win in the most recent meeting between the teams in 2018 at California Memorial Stadium.
Cal's most recent Big Game victory came at Stanford Stadium in 2009 when the Bears were a 34-28 winner in a contest that featured Mike Mohamed's memorable game-saving interception at the Cal three-yard line inside of two minutes remaining and
Shane Vereen's 193 yards rushing and a career-high-tying three touchdowns on a career-high 43 carries. Cal equaled its longest win streak in the series with five straight victories from 2002-06 and won seven of eight from 2002-09.
The Big Game has featured some of the most memorable finishes in the history of college football with five contests being decided on the final play, including the famous 1982 Big Game that ended with Cal's five-lateral, 57-yard kickoff return through the Stanford Band for a touchdown that will forever be remembered simply as "The Play" and gave the Bears an improbable 25-20 victory.
The Big Game has been determined by one touchdown or less on 53 occasions.
Cal (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) and Stanford (4-5, 3-4 Pac-12) are both within reach of becoming bowl eligible with each team having three regular-season games remaining including the Big Game. Cal next hosts USC (6-4, 5-2 Pac-12) and Stanford visits Washington State (4-5, 1-5 Pac-12) this Saturday, November 16. The Golden Bears and Trojans will kick off at 8 pm PT and be televised live by FS1 while Pac-12 Network has the Cardinal and Cougars at 1:30 pm PT.
