Former Walk-On Now A 2019 Second-Team Midseason All-American
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Burlsworth Trophy announced Tuesday that Cal senior safety/kick returner Ashtyn Davis is one of a record 83 players nominated from FBS schools for the 2019 Burlsworth Trophy. The Burlsworth Trophy is given annually to the nation's most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.
The Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on to the Arkansas football team in 1994 and eventually became a three-year starter and 1998 All-American. Burlsworth was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, in particular those who have limited opportunities. Burlworth's life is also the subject of the major motion picture "Greater" released in 2016.
The Burlsworth Trophy will announce 2019 semifinalists and finalists for the prestigious honor on November 12 and 19. The three finalists will be honored and the winner of the 2019 Burlsworth Trophy announced at a ceremony hosted by the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation in conjunction with the Springdale Rotary Club on Monday, Dec. 9, in Springdale, Ark.
Cal's Patrick Laird was one of three finalists for the prestigious honor and attended the event in 2018.
