Thirteen Pro Bears On Teams Headed To NFL Playoffs
28 Former Cal Players Have Captured 36 All-Time Super Bowl Rings Including 21 Over The Last 19 Seasons
BERKELEY – A total of 13 former Cal football student-athletes are members of teams heading to the NFL Playoffs that begin with Wild Card Weekend next Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 4-5, 2020. The list includes nine on active rosters, one on injured reserve and three on practice squads. Nine of the 13 are on teams that will be playing in Wild Card action, while the other four are on teams that received opening weekend byes.
Two former Cal players are on teams scheduled for the first game of Wild Card Weekend with No. 4 AFC seed Houston (10-6, AFC South Champion) featuring Bryan Anger hosting No. 5 Buffalo (10-6) with Lorenzo Alexander on Saturday, Jan. 4 (3:35 pm CT/1:35 pm PT, ESPN/ABC).
The four other Golden Bears in action on the opening weekend of the playoffs will play Sunday, Jan. 5.
Cameron Jordan and No. 3 NFC seed New Orleans (13-3, NFC South Champion) hosts No. 6 Minnesota (10-6) in the first game at 12:05 pm CT/10:05 am PT, FOX) followed by No. 5 Seattle (11-5) featuring Mychal Kendricks and Marshawn Lynch visiting No. 4 Philadelphia (9-7, NFC East Champion) with Richard Rodgers at 4:40 pm ET/1:40 pm PT on NBC.
The four others on teams that have received first-round byes will open the playoffs with home games during the Divisional Round (Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 11-12).
The No. 1 AFC seed and AFC North champion Baltimore (14-2) with
Patrick Mekari will host the lowest remaining AFC seed on Saturday, Jan. 11 (8:15 pm ET/5:15 pm PT, CBS). On Sunday, Jan. 12, No. 2 AFC seed and AFC West champion Kansas City (12-4) featuring
Mitchell Schwartz will host the second-lowest remaining seeds in the AFC at 2:05 pm CT/12:05 pm PT (CBS), while Aaron Rodgers will welcome the No. 2 NFC seed and NFC North Division champion Green Bay (13-3) against the second-lowest remaining NFC seed to Lambeau Field at 5:40 pm CT/3:40 pm PT (FOX).
Chad Hansen (Houston, practice squad),
DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia, injured reserve),
James Looney (Green Bay, practice squad) and
Davis Webb (Buffalo, practice squad) are also with NFL playoff teams but not on active rosters.
A total of 28 former Cal players have captured 36 Super Bowl rings including 21 over the last 19 seasons. Stephen Anderson and
Brian Schwenke were the most recent former Cal players to pick up Super Bowl rings for the New England Patriots last season at Super Bowl LIII although neither played in the contest. Anderson was on the Patriots' 53-player roster for the contest but inactive on gameday, while Schwenke was on injured reserve.
