Bears Face Gaels In Midweek Outing
2/19/2019 6:43 PM | Softball
BERKELEY – California softball will slip in a quick midweek trip to Saint Mary's for a bout with the Gaels on Wednesday before heading to its next preseason tournament.
The Golden Bears head into the yearly matchup with a 5-5 record that includes a pair of top-25 wins over a 22nd-ranked James Madison and 24th-ranked Notre Dame, while the Gaels (1-4) hope to clip a four-game losing streak.
The game is slated for a 3 p.m. (PT) start at Cottrell Field.
While not a salivating record for the Bears, the team is confident in the momentum created over the first two weekends, highlighted by showcasing its dual-threat offense in spirts and the pitching holding up behind co-aces Kamalani Dung and Zoe Conley.
Best demonstrated in a dramatic comeback win against Notre Dame, where Cal rallied back from a four-run deficit to overcome the Fighting Irish 7-6 in a tiebreaker, the Bears flexed their hitting abilities and small-ball knowhow to record four runs in a last-ditch seventh-inning effort.
The Gaels opened up the season with a 7-5 win in Honolulu over Georgia State, before dropping four games.
Last season, the Bears were able to edge the Gaels 3-0 in Moraga, before recording a 13-0 run-rule in Berkeley to seal the sweep.
