Cal Falls To No.8 Stanford On The Farm
STANFORD, Calif. - The Cal women's basketball team could not pull off the upset for the second time in 48 hours, falling to No. 8 Stanford, 75-50, on Saturday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal (18-3, 8-2 Pac-12) game out of the gates strong to snap their two-game skid, opening the game on a 10-0 run and never looking back. The Golden Bears (14-7, 5-5 Pac-12) struggled from the floor all afternoon and trailed by 17 at the end of the first quarter. Stanford only outscored Cal by eight over the remaining three quarters, but the Bears could not make a significant dent into the deficit and fell to the Cardinal on the Farm for the fourth year in a row.
Cal's Kristine Anigwe led all scorers with 20 points and added 20 rebounds to extend her double-double streak to 22 in a row. Anigwe's final basket of the game – a foul shot with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter – pushed her career point total to 2,320, moving into a tie with Colleen Galloway '81 for the most points by any player – male or female – in Cal basketball history.
Anigwe – who leads the nation in rebounding this season with 15.6 rebounds per game and is just 21 rebounds away from breaking the program record – becomes the first player in the nation this season with back-to-back 20-point, 20-rebound games. A three-time All-American, Anigwe went off for 25 points and 24 rebounds in Thursday's upset win, becoming the first player in 20 years to have 20 points and 20 rebounds against Stanford.
Graduate transfer Receé Caldwell added 12 points for the Bears while DiJonai Carrington and Kiana Williams added 19 points apiece for the Cardinal. Senior Alanna Smith added 16 points and four rebounds for Stanford, who extended its home-winning streak to 21 in a row.
Stanford's defense, ranked among the best in the nation, held the Bears to a season-low 50 points on just 16-60 shooting from the field.
The Bears will be back in action next week at Haas Pavilion, hosting No. 4 Oregon at 8 p.m. PT on Friday night.
