Rested Bears Get Back to Action

BERKELEY – California is back in action after getting some deserved rest during its bye week.
The Golden Bears spring into the back half of the season, which means the beginning of five-up, five-count scoring. Now, all five scores in a lineup will be counted toward the team's total score, compared to the opening half of the season when a lineup consisted of six gymnasts and the lowest score could be discarded.
The Bears start the final stretch of the regular season at the International Collegiate Open in Stanford, Calif. on Saturday at 4 p.m. (PT).
Cal sits at No. 10 nationally and faces No. 2 Stanford, Japan's National Team and recent Cal alum and All-American Yordan Aleksandrov, who will compete for Bulgaria. Aleksandrov has continued to stay close to the program and trains alongside his former teammates in Berkeley.
"As we go to compete at the International Challenge, it will be a true test of our international look," said head coach JT Okada. "Team Japan always has a high quality of gymnastics and difficulty; we will battle it out with them and Stanford.
"Alumni Yordan Aleksandrov will get a chance to showcase his gymnastics and that always makes us proud when our gymnasts go on to even higher levels of the sport."
Last time out, Cal posted a 404.000, its highest team score in the last two years against Stanford, in the Bears' penultimate home meet.
Freshman Darren Wong earned MPSF Gymnast of the Week and CGA Rookie of the Week after recording a career-best 81.350 to win the all-around and take the title on the pommel horse.
Cal's notable performance was highlighted by its ability to overcome struggles on the pommel horse and post a season-high 68.450 score on the apparatus, behind three career marks and a pair of season bests in the event.
"It's been a crazy last five weeks," Okada said after Cal's last meet. "All the work that's gone into it. We've seen bits and pieces of it, but we got to see a complete meet. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the team."
The Bears look to keep the coach happy and the momentum going this weekend.
