Bears Sweep Cardinal In Big Row
Cal Closes Regular Season With Strong Showing At Redwood Shores
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Cal men's rowing team closed out the regular season with a convincing performance in Saturday's dual against Stanford, with all three Golden Bear eights winning their respective races at Redwood Shores. Racing in clear conditions and a building cross-headwind, the Bears showed composure and experience, controlling all three races from start to finish.
"The crews raced well today," said Cal head coach Scott Frandsen. "We've made good progress in the past week and the guys were able to go out and execute the race plans that we have been developing. It was great to see the seniors all performing well in the final dual race at Redwood Shores and to see the entire group building momentum towards the Pac-12 Championships in three weeks."
After opening the morning with a coxed fours race between two Golden Bear boats, Cal's third varsity impressed in the first eights race of the day. The Bears got off to a strong start and soon opened up an open water lead. Cal steadily added to its advantage over the final 1,000 meters to cross the finish first.
The second varsity eight followed with an impressive result of its own, jumping out to an early lead over its Bay Area rivals and maintaining speed through the line.
The final race of the day saw the Bears' varsity eight produce impressive speed, finishing in a time of 5:41.4. While the Cardinal were able to keep contact in the early stages of the race, the Bears led by more than a length of open water at the bridge and continued to add to their lead over the final 1,000 meters of the race. With the win, Cal's varsity has now won the Schwabacher Cup over Stanford each of the last six seasons and takes an overall lead of 67-19 in the varsity eight series.
The Bears will now turn their full attention to the championship season, with the Pac-12 Championships and IRA National Championship Regatta remaining on the schedule. The 2019 Pac-12 Rowing Championships will be held at Lake Natoma on Sunday, May 19.
