Bears Ready To Race For Conference Title

Cal Heads To Lake Natoma For 2019 Pac-12 Rowing Championships
GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Cal men's rowing team begins championship racing on Sunday, with the 2019 Pac-12 Championship at Lake Natoma. The Golden Bears have steadily built over the course of the regular season and are ready to test their speed and compete for the conference crown.
"The squad has been building towards this weekend all year and the guys are excited to race," said Cal head coach Scott Frandsen. "The regular season has been a mixture of great races and learning experiences, and the crews have responded well to both. Getting through the selection process for the various crews and giving the lineups a chance to groove in a rhythm together has gone well and there is good, positive energy in all of the boats."
Racing begins at 9:00 a.m. PT with the varsity four, which is not counted in the team scoring total. The four will be followed by racing in the novice eight (9:30 a.m.), third varsity eight (10:00 a.m.), and the second varsity eight (10:45 a.m.). The final men's race of the day of the day will be the varsity eight, with the grand final at 11:00 a.m. PT.
The Pac-12 Championships will be broadcast on tape delay into two 30-minute shows on Pac-12 Networks on Wednesday, May 22 starting with the men's championship at 7 p.m. PT and the women's championship at 7:30 p.m. PT. While there will not be a live stream, live results will be available providing race results in real time. Cal is looking to improve upon its silver medal at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, where the Bears won the novice eight for the third consecutive season. The Bears won silver in all four other races to finish second in the overall team standings. Cal is looking to capture its first Pac-12 title since 2016.
The Bears enter this year's championships coming off another successful season of racing, gaining speed and experience while competing against some of the top crews in the country. Cal closed the regular season by sweeping all three races against Stanford at the Big Row.
After the Pac-12 Championship, the Bears will turn their attention to the IRA National Championship Regatta, which will also take place at Lake Natoma from May 31 to June 2. Cal captured the Varsity Challenge Cup at Lake Natoma in 2016 and is looking to improve upon a bronze medal in the varsity eight last year at Lake Mercer. The IRA will announce the national championship fields, seedings and lane draws via an online selection show on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. PT. The webcast can be viewed free of charge here.
