Vaughn Repeats As First-Team All-American
Lee Earns Third-Team Honors From Baseball America
Andrew Vaughn and
Korey Lee did damage all season hitting back-to-back in Cal's batting order, and the teammates were recognized for it Monday.
Vaughn earned first-team All-America honors from Baseball America for the second time in as many years, while Lee was voted the third-team catcher. It caps quite an eight-day span for the duo, who became the first pair of Cal players to ever be first-round draft picks in the same year.
The honors continue to roll in for Vaughn, the junior first baseman who will head to Omaha, Neb., this week as one of four finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. He's also a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, another national player of the year honor. And a week ago, he became Cal's highest baseball draft pick ever when he was chosen third overall by the Chicago White Sox.
Vaughn hit .374 this season with 15 homers and 50 RBI along with a .549 on-base percentage that ranked third in the country. In 2018, Vaughn was Baseball America's first-team designated hitter en route to winning the first Golden Spikes Award in Cal history.
Lee, who hit behind Vaughn all season as either the No. 3 or No. 4 hitter, led the Bears with 57 RBI while hitting .337 and tying Vaughn with a team-high 15 homers. He threw out 40 percent of attempted base stealers and was a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award as the nation's best collegiate catcher. Lee was drafted 32nd overall by the Houston Astros.
On Thursday, Vaughn will be at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, where the 2019 Golden Spikes winner will be announced on ESPN2. The other three finalists are Vanderbilt outfielder JJ Bleday, Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman and Navy pitcher Noah Song.
