CHICAGO – Senior inside linebacker Evan Weaver was named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award® on Monday. The honor is given annually to both the top collegiate and high school linebackers with each watch list consisting of 51 linebackers to mirror the pro jersey associated with Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history.

The honor is the latest in the 2019 preseason for Weaver, who is the nation's leading returning tackler after collecting 159 as a 2018 junior. He is the first Cal football student-athlete to earn a first-team preseason All-American selection (Athlon) since running back Jahvid Best was a preseason first-team pick prior to the 2009 campaign. Weaver is also on preseason watch lists for the Lott IMPACT Award, the Bednarik Award and now the Butkus Award®.

Semifinalists for the Butkus Award® will be announced Nov. 4, 2019, while the three finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 25, and the winners on or before Dec. 10.
