Golden Bears Head To Westlake Village For Their First Tournament Of 2020
BERKELEY – California men's golf is set to compete in their first tournament of 2020: the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif. The 54-hole event will take place over two days at North Ranch Country Club from January 27-28.
The Golden Bears (ranked No. 34 by Golfstat) will play amongst a talented field of 12 colleges including three teams ranked in the top-10: BYU (No. 4), Pepperdine (No. 6), and Arizona State (No. 10). The Sun Devils are one of four other Pac-12 opponents in the tournament which also includes UCLA (No. 18), Stanford (No. 27), and USC (No. 43). Cal last won the event in 1990 and finished second in 2019.
The Bear's lineup will consist of the following: 1. Finigan Tilly (Junior), 2. Kento Yamawaki (Freshman), 3. Kaiwen Liu (Junior), 4. Jamie Cheatham (Senior), 5. James Song (Sophomore), and individual: Kyle Maspat (Sophomore).
"It's going to be a completely different roster this year," said Cheatham in reference to 2019's four graduated seniors. "But there's a lot of potential for this team: I can attest to how hard we've been working and good things will come."
Some of the younger potential includes Song who was named to 2019's Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Last season, Cal's newcomer of the year produced three top-20 performances including an 11th-place finish at The Farms Invitational (219, +3) and a tie for 35th at the Alister MacKenzie (213, E) where he shot his lowest round of the season (67, -4).
"The potential is there," said Tilly who returns for his junior season. "Golf is an individual sport, but we're a team: we play our own game, but we work towards the same goal."
After finishing the Southwestern Invite next week, the Bears will also compete at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (February 20-22), Cabo Collegiate (March 1-3), Lamkin San Diego Classic (March 9-10), The Goodwin (March 26-28) and Western Intercollegiate (April 13-15) hosted respectively by Hawai'i, Arkansas, San Diego State, Stanford and San Jose State.
The postseason begins with the Pac-12 Championships (April 27-29) co-hosted by Washington and the Pac-12 followed by the NCAA Regionals (May 18-20) at six sites around the country and the NCAA Championships (May 29 – June 3) co-hosted by Arizona State and the NCAA.
