Golden Bears Take 4-0 Record To San Diego
BERKELEY – California rugby will play their final of three consecutive road matches to begin the season this week when they head to San Diego State on Saturday, February 1. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. with a reserve-grade match to follow at 3:00 p.m.
"We're looking forward to taking our next step as a team," said head coach Jack Clark. "I know there are players competing within the depth chart for playing time, so there are lots of reasons to have a performance of which we can be proud."
The Golden Bears will take a 4-0 record with them to Southern California this weekend as they have defeated four UCs to begin the year: UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, UCLA, and UC Davis. A mixed lineup helped Cal achieve their latest victory over the Aggies on January 25 which included all freshmen and sophomores to begin the second half and had 18 different players who crossed the try line.
The Bears have scored 41 tries so far this season including four from junior wing Marcus Shankland. Shankland has received a pair of starts and scored twice against both UCLA and UC Davis. Furthermore, freshman flyhalf Nate Salter has also scored twice and leads the team with eight conversions (seven against UC Davis).
Cal and San Diego State have gone head-to-head four times in the last decade and the Bears are 4-0 during that time. Cal will look to continue their winning streak when they face the Aztecs at ENS 700 which is an on-campus field, situated just behind Viejas Arena.
Cal rugby fans' first opportunity to see their team at home will be on February 8 during Parents' Weekend when they will play a doubleheader against UCLA and California Maritime Academy. The match against UCLA will be broadcast by Pac-12 Networks.
