BERKELEY -- To help Cal Athletics navigate through the financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cal Athletics Fund has launched the "Roll On" campaign, aimed at raising $15 million in annual support of three main pillars for the Golden Bears: people, programs and prevention.

The generosity of the Cal community will enhance world-class experiences for our student-athletes, strengthen a robust 30-program athletics department and ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff during these unprecedented times.

"Prior to the start of the pandemic, our teams were primed for success. From the improvement in our basketball programs to the beginning of strong postseason campaigns by our winter sports, and the start of exciting spring campaigns, plus the anticipation of the most exciting football season in years, we were truly rolling," said Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton. "While we have taken numerous cost-saving measures to remain fiscally responsible through the pandemic, your support will aid our commitment to our people and our programs and ensure we can 'Roll On' safely and successfully."

With the postponement of fall sports seasons, Cal Athletics anticipated a revenue shortfall of $50-55 million. While Cal's 30 programs already have a combined annual fund goal of $10 million each year, the Cal Athletics Fund looks to raise an additional $5 million to offset revenue shortfalls and increased health and safety expenses associated with the pandemic. All told, the Cal Athletics Fund has set a goal to raise $15 million in annual support for the 2020-21 fiscal year to help offset these new costs and safeguard Cal's commitment to providing an exceptional student-athlete experience for all 30 Intercollegiate Athletics programs while positioning the Golden Bears for future success.

"We are asking each member of the Cal family to stretch its annual commitment to help our future leaders reach their full potential during these extraordinary times," said Chief Development Officer Brian Mann. "We recognize that this is a tough time for so many people, but if you are able, please consider an additional gift this fiscal year to help us continue Cal Athletics' outstanding momentum when sports resume."

The "Roll On" campaign's philanthropic efforts will be directed toward continuing to ensure the health and well-being of student-athletes during the pandemic and beyond, including access to testing, sanitation of facilities, creation of additional socially-distanced workout spaces and other preventive measures. The campaign also includes continued support for academic services, student-athlete development, athletic training, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and other health and wellness services to ensure the Bears can carry on their strong tradition of academic and competitive excellence beyond the pandemic.
