Records Set On Vault At Stanford International Open
Asad Jooma Set The School Record On Vault
STANFORD - Multiple records were set on vault, highlighting the California men's gymnastics team's performance at the Stanford international Collegiate Open Saturday at Burnham Pavilion.
The Golden Bears finished the meet in third place with a team score of 389.450. Team Japan won the event (417.200), while Stanford finished second (411.200). Team Norway was fourth with a score of 381.150 and TURN Gymnastics - an international all-star team made up of gymnasts from different countries - came in fifth (177.350).
Cal set multiple school records on vault. The Bears' team score of 71.650 topped the previous school record by half a point. It was the third time this season Cal has eclipsed 70 points in the event - Pac-12 Invitational (71.100) and in the previous meeting at Stanford (70.900) - and the third time Cal has set a school record in the event based on the new scoring system that was put in place in 2017.
Asad Jooma's mark of 14.650 was also a school record. Every Bear competing on vault either set of matched career bests, including
Kyle Shuttle's career-high mark of 14.550, which ranks second in school history after Jooma's score.
"I'm really happy with our fight today," head coach
JT Okada said. "Vault was our second-to-last event, and we had our best vault run of the year. Caleb stuck his vault, and Asad and Kyle also had great vaults. I was happy to have
Kyle Abe step in and hit his routines on parallel bars and high bar. He also debuted on vault, and although it was just an exhibition, I'm really proud of him for stepping up."
In addition to Jooma and Shuttle, the other strong vault scores included
Caleb Rickard (14.250, career high),
Kyte Crigger (14.100, career high) and
Yu-Chen Lee (14.100, tied career high for the third time this season).
Rickard's vault score was one of two career-best marks for the Cal sophomore on Saturday. He also posted a personal best on floor (13.200).
A couple of Cal's freshmen posted season bests on pommel horse in Shuttle at 12.750 and
Will Lavanakul (13.700).
The Bears will return to Haas Pavilion for the final time in 2020 next weekend. Cal will compete against Navy on Senior Day on Saturday, March 7, at 4 p.m. at Haas.
