Cal Faces 10th-Ranked UCLA Sunday At Haas
BERKELEY – While its comeback fell short on Friday night, the Cal women's basketball team will look to bounce back quickly, hosting No. 10 UCLA at 2 p.m. PT on Sunday. The Golden Bears (9-13, 1-10 Pac-12) opened the weekend slate with a 75-67 loss to USC on Friday night while the Bruins (20-2, 9-2 Pac-12) are coming off a 79-69 victory over No. 6 Stanford at Maples Pavilion.
The series between the California schools has been tightly contested as of late, with eight of the last ten meetings between the schools decided by eight points or fewer. The Bruins have had the better of the matchup as of late, winning the last five head-to-head meetings between the teams, including an overtime win in Berkeley last season.
Cal looks to flip the script against its in-state rival and snap a six-game home losing streak. The Bears also look to pick up another upset victory as they face their sixth top-10 opponent of the season. Cal is 1-7 overall this season against ranked opponents, with an 84-80 win over No. 20 Arkansas on November 24.
Cal nearly ended the skid on Friday night, but came up short in a tightly-contested battled with USC. The Bears got off to strong start and led by one at the half. However, the Trojans took control in the third quarter with a 13-3 run and were able to capitalize on 20 Cal turnovers on the day. Senior Jaelyn Brown led the Bears with 22 points in the loss, also adding eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Brown connected on four three-pointers on the day, helping Cal match its season-high with nine treys on the night. Redshirt senior Sara Anastasieska had another strong showing for the Bears with 16 points while junior forward Alaysia Styles had 10 points for her second consecutive game in double-figures. Freshman Cailyn Crocker added eight points for the Bears off the bench, all of which came in the second half.
Cal's lone returning starter from last season, Brown leads the Bears and ranks 10th in the conference in scoring with 14.5 points per game. Brown also leads the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (84.5 percent) and scored 13 points in her most recent outing against UCLA, going 5-8 from the floor.
