Bears Prevail For Win Over No. 24 Arizona
No. 8 Cal Tops Wildcats, 196.400-196.275
BERKELEY – Facing a number of injuries to staples in their lineup, No. 8 California tested its depth and prevailed with a 196.400-196.275 victory over No. 24 Arizona Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Nina Schank, who had never performed a competitive collegiate routine, made her all-around debut and delivered a spectacular finale to help the Golden Bears seal the win. With Arizona's meet completed and five routines in for the Bears on floor, the score was locked at 196.275-196.275 before Schank, who was performing just her second floor routine of the year, produced a career-best 9.90 to propel Cal to its 196.400 final score.
Schank was crowned both the floor and all-around champion for her efforts, finishing with a 39.475 in her four-event debut.
She shared the floor win with
Milan Clausi, while fellow all-arounder
Maya Bordas won bars with a 9.925. Cal also saw all-around performances by
Nevaeh DeSouza and
Grace Quinn, who made her collegiate debut on bars for her first all-around experience.
Led by a pair of 9.95s in the back half of the lineup, Cal put up another booming vault score to start the meet, tallying a 49.475 for the second week in a row. The total marks Cal's second-highest score in the event in school history.
Rachael Mastrangelo and Clausi each executed their Yurchenko 1.5s to near-perfection to earn 9.95s, and DeSouza's 9.90 helped the effort.
Although Cal was forced to count a fall on bars, the rotation wasn't without its bright spots. For the second week in a row, Bordas recorded a season-high 9.925 to lead the lineup. Schank continued her all-around debut with a 9.90 on the event, and Quinn earned a 9.775 in her collegiate bars debut. With the fall, Cal combined for a 48.650 to lead the Wildcats 98.125-97.975 halfway through the meet.
Cal turned in a solid beam set despite missing event staples
Talitha Jones and
Kyana George due to injuries. DeSouza led off in Jones' place, earning a 9.80, and Clausi followed with a 9.85. In the anchor position,
Nina Schank made her career debut on beam with a 9.85, giving Cal a 48.900 on the event.
The Bears went 6-for-6 on floor for a strong close to the meet, combining for a 49.375. Clausi and Schank's 9.90s led the lineup, and Quinn set a career-high 9.875. Mastrangelo finished nearly as strong as she started, earning a 9.85.
Cal wraps up regular-season conference action at UCLA, where the Bears will face the Bruins in a dual meet on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. The meet airs live on Pac-12 Networks.
