BERKELEY - California men's soccer lost 2-0 to Washington in a Pac-12 Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Witter Rugby Field.
The loss left the Golden Bears with a 0-2 record (0-2 Pac-12), while UW improved to 3-1 (1-1 Pac-12).
Washington's pressure early on in the first half put Cal on the back foot. But Cal midfielder Juan Martinez had one of the game's first good chances when his 17th-minuted shot caromed off the right goalpost.
The Huskies earned a penalty kick in the 27th minute, with Dylan Teves converting the PK to put Cal in a 1-0 deficit.
In the 44th minute, UW's Lucas Meek put away a cross by Charlie Ostrem from close range, and Cal trailed 2-0.
As in the season opener against Stanford, Cal goalkeeper Collin Travasos played the second half for the Bears. The redshirt freshman made five saves to stymie the Huskies and keep the game close.
The Bears had more possession in the second half, and Cal defender Ian Lonergan forced a save out of UW goalie Sam Fowler with a long-range shot in the 67th minute. Freshman forward Nate Carrasco had a late chance, but shot wide, and the Bears couldn't muster up a goal.
"The second half was much better and felt more like us," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "Once again, a real game is something that is so valuable right now during this return for the players. There is a ton to gain by playing real matches and then studying the video. That's the process we are embracing."
Cal next plays at Oregon State on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m.
