BERKELEY – Nathan Martorella drove in seven runs with two swings of the bat, and California exploded for 14 hits in a 16-3 series-opening win against Saint Mary's Thursday night at Evans Diamond.
After making it a 10-1 Cal advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run home run, Martorella added a grand slam the following inning. The Golden Bears (5-4), winners in four of their last five games, hit three home runs in the victory;
Quentin Selma connected with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to get Cal on the board.
Cal's 16-run effort came against a Saint Mary's (5-4) pitching staff that entered the game with a 2.41 collective earned run average this season. It's the most runs Cal has scored in a single game since plating 18 at Washington on May 23, 2019.
With Cal leading 2-0, the Gaels scored an unearned run off of
Jack Wolger in the top of the third. The Bears went to the bullpen from there, giving way to
Mitchell Scott, who tossed 2.1 hitless innings of relief to pick up the victory. Six Cal pitchers combined to scatter nine Saint Mary's hits and hold the Gaels to just two earned runs.
Dylan Beavers singled home
Keshawn Ogans and Selma plated
Darren Baker with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 in the third, and Cal never looked back. The Bears tallied 12 of their 16 runs over a three-inning span from the fifth through the seventh.
