Four Bears Secure Spots In The Finals
Over A Dozen Golden Bears In Action As The Olympics Heads Into Its First Full Week
TOKYO – 16 Golden Bears across seven sports were in action the past 24 hours in Tokyo with four securing spots in the finals over the next few days.
Ryan Murphy is one of three as he placed first in his 100m backstroke semifinals with a time of 52.24. He currently holds the world and Olympic record with a 51.85 mark set in August of 2016 in Rio.

The seven sports in competition were: women's rowing, rugby, softball, men's swimming, women's swimming, women's table tennis and women's water polo.

Women's Rowing
Rowan McKellar of Great Britain placed first in the women's four repechage with a time of 6:46.20. Her team will compete in Final A on Thursday.
Kendall Chase and the United States placed four spots back in fifth. They will next compete in Final B which takes place on Thursday as well.

Rugby
A pair of Bears competed in rugby sevens on Sunday night and early Monday morning with
Danny Barrett and Team USA getting off to a hot 2-0 start. The Eagles defeated Ireland 19-17 after leading 12-0 three minutes into the match and also took down Kenya 19-14 after scoring a try at death to win the game. Barrett started both contests and the U.S. has now secured a spot in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile,
Andre Jin Coquillard and the Republic of Korea were unable to find success in the first two matches, falling to both Australia and New Zealand.

Softball
Valerie Arioto and the United States (5-0) defeated No. 2 Japan 2-1, giving up just their second run of the Olympic games in the process. The U.S. came from behind for the second consecutive contest as it trailed 1-0 heading into the final two frames. The victory gave the U.S. home-field advantage heading into the gold medal game, which will be a rematch against Japan on Tuesday.

Men's Swimming

Hugo González (Spain) clocked 53.05, the fourth-fastest time in the second heat and seventh fastest overall. Early Monday morning (PT),
Zheng Quah (Singapore) placed 22nd overall in the 200 butterfly heats in 1:56.42.

Women's Swimming
Alicia Wilson of Great Britain competed overnight and qualified for the semifinals in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.39. She will race again this evening.

Women's Table Tennis
Lily Zhang (USA) defeated Edem Offiong of Nigeria in the second round of women's singles. She will compete in the round three this evening.

Women's Water Polo
Six Cal women's water polo players competed in Tokyo with four going head-to-head in the Spain vs. Canada matchup.
Roser Tarrago of Spain defeated Canada and
Kelly McKee,Â
Kindred Paul and
Emma Wright 14-10. Tarrago collected a hat trick in the effort and played 18:48.
Anna Illes of Hungary scored her first goal of the Tokyo Olympics in a 10-10 tie against the Russian Olympic Committee. Illes has one goal and one block so far and has played a total of 17:38.
Kitty Lynn Joustra (the Netherlands) was the final Bear to compete as her team fell to the Australians.
