SEATTLE, Wash. – The California men's soccer team battled top-ranked Washington to a 0-0 tie for much of Sunday's game – until the Huskies scored in the 75th minute, and the Golden Bears lost, 1-0.

"We can't fault our guys for their effort," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "They battled and kept the game even for a long amount of the game. We were disappointed not to see the game through to the end and get one on them. We have to put this one behind us, realize this is the halfway point of the Pac-12 season and prepare ourselves for the second half of conference play. Hopefully we'll make a good showing the rest of the way."

Freshman goalkeeper Marco Brougher got his first collegiate start against No. 1 UW and made two of his three saves in the first half.

"I was extremely proud of him," Griffin said. "He came out and was a big presence in the box and put a stop to most of their aerial game. The Huskies are known to be dominant at that. But Marco was confident dealing with their high balls and kept us in the game."

At 74:57, a Washington corner kick set up the goal. The corner found a Husky, whose header bounced off the crossbar, and Gio Miglietti headed the loose ball into the upper corner of the net.

Cal had its best scoring chance in the 79th minute, when forward Nate Carrasco, battling a defender in the box, connected with a high pass and headed on goal. But UW goalie Jadon Bowton made the save.

Brougher made his best save in the 86th minute, when Ilijah Paul finished off a long run into the box with a low shot that the young Bear stopped.

Cal returns home to host San Francisco in a nonconference game on Oct. 15 at Edwards Stadium.
