Cal Falls To SMU 70-56

Jayda Curry Leads Team With 15 Points

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal women's basketball team (6-2) lost a tough game against SMU (7-2) in the final game of the 2nd Annual Raising The B.A.R. Invitational on Sunday at Haas Pavilion. Jayda Curry led the Bears with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and added five assists and five rebounds on her way to being named to the All-Invitational Team. SMU's Jasmine Smith was named the Invitational MVP as she averaged 17 points, on 62 percent shooting, and seven rebounds over the two games.

"I'm disappointed in how we played today," said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. "We had moments but we just weren't consistent. SMU is a good team and they made us pay. We know we're a work in progress and we just have to keep working."

After Evelien Lutje Schipholt made the opening bucket, SMU went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter to take control of the game early. The Mustangs shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the opening quarter to take a five-point lead going into the second. The Bears opened the second on a 7-0 run to regain the lead just two minutes into the quarter and traded buckets with SMU the rest of the way going into the half tied at 32-32.

Cal was able to force three turnovers in the opening minutes of the third quarter to help the team take a five-point lead midway through, but SMU was able to respond with an 8-0 run before a 3-pointer by Leilani McIntosh ended it to tie the game once again with two minutes left in the quarter. Both teams shot exactly 41.7 percent from the field in the quarter, but SMU was helped by seven free throw attempts to zero by Cal and took a four-point lead going into the final frame. The Mustangs got hot in the fourth, shooting 72.7 percent and went on a 16-4 run to take control of the game and build its largest lead of the game at 16 points with just 1:59 before coasting to the victory.

SMU had a significant advantage at the free-throw line making 12-of-16 attempts compared to Cal who went 3-of-5, while also outscoring Cal 30-18 in the paint. The Mustangs had four players score in double-figures including Tamia Jones (17) and Savannah Wilkinson (16) who were named to the All-Invitational Team.
