Bears Head To UCLA
Rugby Heads To Westwood To Face The Bruins On Saturday
BERKELEY – Following its win over BYU at home last weekend, California rugby returns to Los Angeles to face UCLA on Saturday, March 5 at 1pm with a reserve-grade match following at 2:30pm.
"We have tons of respect for the Bruins and we're anticipating a hard match," head coach Jack Clark said. Our focus needs to be on our own development. Naturally, we want to find a way to win, but just as importantly, we need to continue our improvement as a team. We have a ways to go to reach our potential."
On February 26, the Bears hosted Brigham Young at Witter Rugby Field in what proved to be a back-and-forth battle. The Bears held a 10-point advantage at the half, but the Cougars took a brief lead of their own before Cal pulled ahead in the final minute; the Bears pushed their way inside the 22 of BYU territory before senior
Nick Bloom was able to find some space to score the game-winning try. Four Bears scored tries in the contest, including Bloom, sophomore
Will Shankland, junior
Max Schumacher and senior
Nathan Zylstra.
Schumacher put together a solid statistical month in February. During Cal's victorious two-game weekend trip to Arizona and Grand Canyon, he led the team with five tries overall, including four against GCU. Schumacher went 12-for-14 on conversion attempts against the Wildcats and was 19-for-28 overall during the weekend. Between tries and conversions, he was responsible for 63 points over two games. Another try against BYU the following weekend brought his total to 68 for the month.
This weekend at Wallis Annenberg Stadium, Cal will face a 2-2 UCLA team that is coming off of a 57-3 victory over Utah last Saturday. The previous week, the Bruins were narrowly defeated by Saint Mary's (41-31) after leading the Gaels 31-12 at the half in Moraga. UCLA's second win came in its first weekend of the regular season when the Bruins defeated UC San Diego 74-0. In a preseason matchup with 22-minute halves earlier this season, Cal defeated UCLA at the Dennis Storer Classic 38-8. The Bears are 10-0 against the Bruins over the past 10 years which includes a win during the 2014 Varsity Cup Super Regional.
