OJAI, Calif. – Seventh-seeded California men's tennis bowed out of the Pac-12 Championship with a 4-0 loss to second-seeded USC in Thursday's quarterfinals at Libbey Park.
 
The 13th-ranked Trojans completed their win over the 50th-ranked Golden Bears when Samuel Rubell defeated Cal's Lucas Magnaudet, 7-6, 6-4.
 
Cal's record falls to 11-10. USC improves to 19-5 and advances to Friday's semifinals of the conference tournament.
 
The Bears dropped the doubles point when USC's Peter Makk and Lodewijk Westrate defeated Carl Emil Overbeck and Derrick Chen, 6-1, on court two.
 
Things were looking up in singles, with the Bears winning three of six first sets. On court four, Overbeck had a lead in the third set over Ryan Colby, 6-4, 2-6, 3-0, while on court five, Chen was in a second-set tiebreak and close to wrapping up a win over USC's 117th-ranked Lodewijk Westrate at 6-1, 6-6. Over on court two, Cal senior Philip Hjorth split sets with Bradley Frye and was heading to a third set.
 
But before the Bears could complete those matches, USC picked up wins on courts one, three and ultimately six to end the tournament for Cal.
