Five-Run Eighth Inning Fuels Cal’s 9-8 Win At No. 25 Oregon
The Golden Bears took the lead for good with a five-spot in the eighth frame, which was highlighted by a four-run fielding error in right field. Oregon plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the winning run on second base with two outs before Josh White was able to slam the door for his second save of the season.
Cal improved to 21-22 overall (11-13 Pac-12) and snapped a four-game losing streak in conference play, despite ultimately dropping the series.
Trailing 4-1 with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Bears pulled within one run on a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield by Hance Smith before jumping ahead in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, Smith lofted a fly ball down the right-field line and Oregon right fielder Anthony Hall overran it. The miscue allowed the ball to roll into the corner and Smith rounded the bases, pushing Cal ahead, 8-5.
Cal made it 9-5 in the ninth with an RBI single from Nathan Martorella. Oregon (28-15, 13-8) cut Cal's lead to 9-6 on three singles against Christian Becerra before the Bears went to White out of the bullpen. A fielding error at second base allowed for two more runs to score, but White was able to induce a game-ending groundout to first base.
Oregon's first four runs came via a pair of home runs, with Gavin Grant hitting a three-run long ball in the second inning and Josh Kasevich adding a solo shot in the sixth. Both home runs were against Sam Stoutenborough, who went 5.2 innings while striking out four Ducks in his sixth start of the season.
Cal's first run came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Smith, who was robbed of a home run by Oregon center fielder Colby Shade.
Ian May (2-0) earned the win on the mound after getting the last two outs of the seventh.
Caleb Lomavita had a team-high three hits while Martorella, Keshawn Ogans and Dom Souto had two apiece.
