Cal Takes Game One, 7-1, Over Arizona
BERKELEY – Sona Halajian crushed her 12th home run of the year and threw a complete game in the circle to lead California past No. 25 Arizona, 7-1, in game one of the series on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Makena Smith had three hits and Acacia Anders hit her eighth long ball of the season for the Bears (27-23-1, 7-12 Pac-12) as Cal collected 10 hits on the day. Allie Skaggs hit a solo home run for the Wildcats (31-17, 6-13 Pac-12).
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a pitcher's duel through two complete with Halajian stranding six Wildcat runners after three Arizona times to the plate. The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on three straight singles, the last coming on an RBI bunt off the bat of Tatum Anzaldo.
Halajian followed with a deep blast well over the wall in centerfield, a 3-run shot to make it 4-0, California, after the third frame. The San Anselmo native, Halajian, settled in from the circle after that, retiring nine straight Wildcat hitters, a team with the fifth-best team batting average in the country.
The Bears' bats stayed hot, however, with Smith driving in another run in the fourth on a long RBI single high off the wall in right field, making it 5-0 California through four. It was 7-0 after Anders hit a 2-run shot in the fifth, before UA finally got on the board with a Skaggs solo shot in the visitor sixth.
Halajian limited the powerful Arizona lineup to just five hits on the day while striking out six to earn her 18th win of the year in the circle. Amani Bradley went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Bears, including an RBI double.
UP NEXT
The Bears and Wildcats continue the series on Saturday, May 7 with a 1 pm PT first pitch at Levine-Fricke Field on Pac-12 Plus.
