Bears Send Four Boats To Henley Royal Regatta
First Time Since 2017 For Cal At Historic Race
BERKELEY – Twenty-eight members of the Cal men's rowing team will head to the United Kingdom next week to race in the annual Henley Royal Regatta. The Bears will send four boats to the six-day event that takes place at Henley-on-Thames, England.
All racing will be
streamed live, with results and information also available by following
@HenleyRegatta on Twitter.
"After a successful 2022 season, capped off with the Varsity 8+ winning the National Championship, we are excited to take a large group over to race at the Henley Royal Regatta," said head coach
Scott Frandsen. "Our internal standard is that crews that win the Pac12 Championship have earned the right to go so we are taking the Varsity 8+ to race in the Ladies Plate event, the JV 8+ to race in two 4+s in the Prince Albert, and the Freshman 8+ to race in the Temple Cup. The guys are all excited to get over to Henley and take in the unique spectacle that the regatta provides; we will immerse ourselves in the culture of British rowing for a weekend and enjoy it... and then we'll get back to California! I'm really proud of how all of our crews have raced all year and what they have accomplished; this trip will be an extension of that success."
The Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, with the exception of the years affected by two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. The historic event features a unique style of racing with only two lanes. The knockout-style races are held on a 2,112-meter course, slightly longer than the 2,000 meters commonly used in the NCAA. Cal last raced in the event in 2017.
